How JSW Is Using VR to Transform Safety Training

How JSW Is Using VR to Transform Safety Training

In this episode, K. Kiran Kumar shares how traditional safety training methods struggled with scale, retention, and high workforce turnover across large industrial operations. He explains why JSW adopted VR to train thousands of contract workers, how immersive learning improved retention for over twelve months, and how VR helped standardise safety awareness across multiple plants and states. The conversation also covers why in-VR assessments, custom modules, and data dashboards were critical to making the program successful at scale. Now VR Talking KK Landscape 1

JSW operates across multiple businesses and geographies. What were the biggest challenges with traditional safety training at that scale?

Scale was always the hardest part. We had thousands of workers, many of them contract workers, spread across plants in different states. Traditional classroom training could not ensure consistency or retention.

Another challenge was turnover. By the time someone was trained, there was often a new batch of workers coming in. We were constantly repeating the same sessions.

So training was happening, but the impact was limited.

Exactly. People attended sessions, but the learning did not always translate into safer behaviour on site.

VR allows people to experience situations rather than imagine them. When someone goes through a scenario in VR, they remember it far better than a lecture or a slide deck.

We also liked the idea that mistakes could be made safely. Workers could see the consequences without being exposed to actual danger.

Very positively. Many of them said this was the first time safety training felt practical and relevant to their daily work.

Yes. We saw learning retention for at least twelve months. That was a major improvement compared to earlier methods.

Assessments inside VR helped us understand learning outcomes. Data allowed us to see who needed additional support and which modules needed improvement.

VR is now part of our long term approach. It is not a pilot anymore. It is how we think about scalable, effective safety training.
