What is the Valve Steam Frame?
The Valve Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset developed by Valve Corporation, officially announced in November 2025. It replaces the Valve Index, which Valve confirmed is no longer in production, and represents a fundamental shift in how Valve approaches VR hardware: wireless, self-contained, and built around SteamOS rather than requiring a tethered gaming PC.
The Steam Frame runs a VR version of SteamOS, the same Linux-based operating system used in the Steam Deck, and uses Valve's Proton compatibility layer to run Linux, Windows, and Android games natively on the device. For content that exceeds the onboard chip's capabilities, a 6GHz wireless adapter streams from a connected PC or Steam Machine, making it what Valve describes as a "streaming-first" device.

The headset weighs 185 grams as a base unit and around 440 grams with the battery, strap, and facial interface attached, making it lighter than the Meta Quest 3.
Processor and Memory
The device runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC with 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, double what the Quest 3 offers. Storage options are 256GB and 1TB, with a microSD card slot for expansion. Memory cards can be shared across SteamOS devices including the Steam Deck and Steam Machine.
Eye Tracking and Foveated Streaming
The Steam Frame includes integrated eye tracking, which Valve uses for foveated streaming rather than just foveated rendering. By concentrating image quality where the user is actually looking, Valve claims this delivers a significant improvement in effective image quality and bandwidth efficiency across every game in the Steam library.
Tracking and Controllers
The headset uses inside-out tracking via four onboard monochrome cameras, with infrared LEDs to support tracking in low-light environments. No external base stations are required. The included controllers use a split gamepad layout with a D-pad, thumbsticks, ABXY buttons, triggers, and bumpers, and use tunneling magnetoresistance thumbsticks, which Valve says are more resistant to drift than the Hall effect sensors in Quest controllers.

At GDC 2026, Valve introduced the Steam Frame Verified programme, requiring games to hit 90 FPS to receive verification for standalone play, giving developers a concrete performance target to build against.
What Could It Mean for Enterprise VR
For organisations with existing SteamVR content investments, the Steam Frame removes the need for dedicated PC workstations paired with each headset, reducing deployment cost and setup complexity for multi-headset training rooms. Steam Business tools already support centralised content deployment and licensing management for enterprise SteamVR deployments, so the ecosystem infrastructure exists.
The quality of the Valve Index's tracking and audio made it the preferred hardware for enterprise VR applications demanding high fidelity. With the Index now discontinued, the Steam Frame is Valve's answer for organisations where SteamVR content quality is a priority, now in a standalone form factor.
Release and Pricing
The Steam Frame is targeted for the first half of 2026, though Valve has flagged delays caused by global RAM and storage component shortages. Pricing has not been officially confirmed, but the device is expected to come in below the Valve Index's price point.
Valve has marked the Steam Frame, Steam Machine, and Steam Controller as "coming soon" on the Steam backend, with the company reaffirming its 2026 shipping commitment.
What to Watch For
Valve has strong credibility among XR developers, and the Steam Frame has already attracted significant developer attention, with dev kits available to Steamworks partners ahead of launch. The open question is how well SteamOS and Proton handle VR-specific workloads at 90 FPS and above on mobile hardware.
