XR is short for extended reality. It’s an umbrella term that encompasses VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality), and MR (Mixed Reality).

These technologies have taken over in the past decade. Multiple factors have contributed to this, including immense investment from Meta, improvements in hardware, and advancements in software. XR devices such as the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro are now present in both our personal spaces and workspaces. 

A report from IDC showcases an upward curve in terms of XR device adoption, with total device shipments experiencing a 44.4% year-on-year growth. In 2026, IDC predicts the shipments will further grow by 33.5 %.

How is XR Training Different from Traditional Training?

XR training programmes use some or all of the XR mediums to provide training for their workforces. It could include:

  • Virtual reality for fire emergency training

  • Augmented reality for machine maintenance guidance

  • Mixed reality for surgical training

How to Choose Between AR, VR, and MR for Training

3. Where does training happen and what hardware is practical?

If you have a dedicated space for training, then VR could be the right choice. If not, you can explore if AR or MR fits your needs.

Also, VR needs dedicated headsets. AR experiences can run on smart glasses, phones, or tablets.

Common Challenges You May Face During XR Training Deployment and How You Can Overcome Them

Aside from choosing the right medium tailored to your use case, there are some common challenges you might face during XR training deployment. 

Problem #1: Low adoption among frontline workers

Frontline workers who are unfamiliar with XR technology might be resistant to adopting it. Especially if it’s thrust upon them impromptu.

The solution here is to run short orientation sessions so your workers become familiar with XR. Only then will the formal training start.

Problem #2: Content that doesn't reflect actual site conditions

If you opt for a generic, pre-built XR learning module, you’ll receive training content that doesn’t match what your workers have to learn.
