How PI Industries Turned HR-Led Onboarding Into a Self-Paced Web Module That’s Reusable Across 7 Verticals

PI Industries is an Indian agrisciences and chemical manufacturing enterprise. Founded in 1946, the publicly traded company has 6,300+ employees globally, including 500+ scientists and researchers.

PI partnered with AutoVRse to replace their live onboarding sessions with an interactive web module that new hires can take at their own pace, by themselves. Modules that are reusable across the entire PI group for any new hires.

Onboarding of new employees was constrained by HR's availability

PI Industries onboarded new employees through presentations led by its HR team. The presentation was delivered across three live sessions that ran from 90 minutes to two hours, and covered PI’s goals, work, and values. The content remained the same across all sessions.

Every onboarding posed a challenge: making both the HR and the new hires available at the same time. And if a large batch joined, the sessions had to be held multiple times, making the scheduling quite challenging.

Also, once a session ended, new employees had no easy way to revisit the material. To revisit a single topic, they had to search through recordings.

Likewise, PI had no way to measure how much of the onboarding material new hires actually retained. If the hires understood the scale of the organization, they’d just become a part of.

An interactive, web-based onboarding experience through PI’s history, values, and plants

PI Industries had tried to build a web-based onboarding experience with two different vendors. Neither delivered within the given timeline.

So, when the project idea resurfaced, PI decided to partner with AutoVRse. Primarily drawn by AutoVRse’s track record of delivering for major enterprise clients.

Using content PI’s HR team already used to onboard employees, AutoVRse developed a web-first onboarding experience. The 5 modules and 4 virtual tours covered:

  • PI’s 80-year history and its list of achievements

  • The core values the organization stands for

  • How to use MyPI, PI’s internal employee portal

  • 360° tours of PI’s manufacturing plants

Instead of a set of slides, new hires consume the material on the web. The experience lets them move through a 3D environment, with the camera guiding them from one slice of PI’s history to the next.

Each section carefully designed to make onboarding self-paced and revisitable

The module wasn’t built around a common onboarding template. But to the specific onboarding needs PI Industries had:

New hires onboard without waiting for an HR’s schedule to open up

The modules are accessible from PI’s internal LMS. So new employees can complete it at their own pace, on their own, during their first two weeks.

Content that’s always available to revisit as needed

If stuck, new hires can directly look up any topic from the experience. No more combing through a session recording to find the required onboarding information.

Built-in quizzes that test new hires on their knowledge retention

The experience features quizzes that test new hires on the onboarding material they’ve just learned. Unlike live presentations, PI now has a way to check retention.

A single, reusable onboarding experience for new hires across all 7 verticals of the group

PI’s team received the completed web experience with a positive reception.

As PI’s values, goals, and expectations are shared across its entire organizational structure, the module delivers the standard onboarding to every new hire. The location doesn’t matter.

HR is also freed from having to conduct the same sessions for every new batch. HR’s schedule is no longer a limitation.

Next in line for PI: 360° plant shoots, wider rollout, and new VR safety modules

The immediate step that the AutoVRse team is working on is bringing PI’s manufacturing plants to life as 4 different 360° experiences, each covering a different plant. New hires will be able to grasp the sheer scale of the organization they’ve joined, learning from direct experience without personally visiting the plant locations.

The partnership is also growing, expanding beyond onboarding to safety use cases. PI and AutoVRse are currently working together on 3 VR safety training modules, aiming to address the unique training pain points that PI has.
