How Eli Lilly Helped Doctors Go From Learning to Hands-On Medical Education With VR and MR

Eli Lilly is an American pharmaceutical company founded in 1876.  Eli Lilly has manufacturing plants located in 10 countries and has 51,000+ employees across the globe. AutoVRse created two immersive experiences—Ramiven and Copellor—that let doctors visiting Eli Lilly’s booths at medical conferences explore breast cancer and psoriasis treatments and effects up close.

Showcasing the mechanism of treatment to doctors at medical conferences

At prestigious medical conferences, Eli Lilly presents its latest proven treatments to doctors, department heads, and other healthcare professionals. This is a busy target audience. One that’s short on time, hurrying from stall to stall.

The common formats include slide presentations, brochures, and conversations with representatives. But these formats fail to capture complex conditions like breast cancer and psoriasis. And fail to showcase how the new treatments result in positive clinical outcomes.

The result: valuable medical information gets conveyed without the clarity it demands or in a format that makes it memorable.

Two immersive experiences that take doctors from exploring a disease to treating a virtual patient

Eli Lilly partnered with AutoVRse to create two immersive medical education experiences. Each experience focused on separate, specific treatments. Both drew from Eli Lilly’s own expertise and medical references.

Eli Lilly partnered with AutoVRse to create two immersive medical education experiences. Each experience focused on separate, specific treatments. Both drew from Eli Lilly’s own expertise and medical references.

These experiences were:

  1. Ramiven: focused on treatment of early breast cancer.

  2. Copellor: focused on treatment of psoriasis.

Both retain the same structure. First, doctors explore the condition visually by examining 3D anatomy and affected areas up close. Then, they put the knowledge to work, reviewing different patient cases and deciding on the right course of treatment in each scenario.

Designed for senior doctors, to showcase multiple patient scenarios, and for easy setup at events

The two experiences were both built around the specific pain points Eli Lilly had:

Both VR and MR modes to make the experiences comfortable for senior doctors

In either experience, doctors have the option to choose and switch between VR and MR as per their personal preference. MR mode made the experiences more accessible to doctors less comfortable with VR.

Covers multiple, distinct patient scenarios and treatment impact

Doctors have the option to choose between three patients, each impacted by the disease in a different area. They could work through all three or examine just one, based on personal preference.

Accurate visual representation based on medical references

Each condition is shown in intricate detail, especially how it changes over the span of treatment. For accuracy, AutoVRse relied on Eli Lilly’s own material and medical references when creating the visuals.

Easy setup at events using an exclusive channel

The experiences run on two Meta Quest 3 headsets and are deployed through a private app channel that’s exclusive to Eli Lilly. No complex, multi-step installation is required at the booth.

Both experiences delivered and in active use at Eli Lilly’s conference booths

The immersive experiences of Ramiven and Copellor are now part of how Eli Lilly engages doctors at medical conferences. The project has received positive feedback since deployment.

So, at conference booths, doctors no longer read or hear about the treatment. Rather, they experience it up close, actively working through a case, either in VR or MR.

Exploring new modules in more therapy areas

Eli Lilly and AutoVRse are now in discussions about the next set of modules. Especially new medical education experiences in additional therapy areas, expanding beyond treatment to the patient’s experience of care.

As the library grows, Eli Lilly will have a wider range of hands-on experiences to bring to medical conferences. No longer relying on formats like presentations and brochures that fail to cater to the attentional demands of busy healthcare professionals.
